How to Choose Work Gloves for the Task

Canadian workplace guidance places PPE after efforts to eliminate or control a hazard through more effective measures. Gloves do not remove a hazard. They can help protect the hands when the correct design is selected, fitted, used and maintained as part of a broader safety program.

Common work-glove constructions

  • Polyurethane-coated gloves: often selected where dexterity and a lighter coating are useful.
  • Nitrile-coated gloves: commonly chosen for durability and grip, with different formulations and coverage patterns.
  • Latex-coated crinkle-grip gloves: use a textured coating that can support grip in appropriate conditions.
  • Cotton or knitted gloves: may suit general handling, liners or light-duty tasks where the product’s limitations are acceptable.
  • Leather-palm gloves: can provide abrasion resistance for general material handling.
  • Insulated gloves: add a liner for cold conditions, but insulation alone does not establish chemical, cut or impact protection.

Understanding cut-resistant ratings

A manufacturer-stated ANSI cut level is a tested performance classification. Use the exact rating and test information provided for the model. A higher cut level does not make a glove suitable for every hazard and does not automatically establish puncture, impact, chemical or heat protection.

Grip, coating coverage and dexterity

Palm coatings leave the back more breathable, while fuller coatings cover more of the glove. A more aggressive texture may improve grip but can reduce sensitivity for fine tasks. Match these trade-offs to the actual work and conditions.

Chemical exposure requires separate verification

Do not select a glove for chemical handling solely because it contains nitrile, latex, vinyl or another familiar material. CCOHS notes that no glove material is resistant to every chemical. Review the safety data sheet and glove manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact substance, concentration and expected contact time.
