How to Read N95, CA-N95 and Respirator Labels in Canada

Quick answer: Start with the exact designation, manufacturer and model—not the shape or marketing name. N95, CA-N95, KN95, KF94 and FFP2 refer to different standards. Similar-looking respirators are not automatically interchangeable.

Why the label matters

A flat-fold or cup shape does not establish a respirator’s standard. The label and documentation identify the system under which the model was evaluated. Health Canada advises buyers to look for recognized markings and to be cautious when expected identifiers are missing.

NIOSH N95

NIOSH classifies filtering facepiece respirators by oil resistance and filtration efficiency. N means not resistant to oil; 95 identifies the minimum filtration efficiency under the NIOSH test. Health Canada says authentic NIOSH respirators display the manufacturer, model, NIOSH name or logo and a TC approval number in the form TC-84A-XXXX.

NIOSH-approved disposable N95 respirators use head straps. An ear-loop product described as “N95” should not be assumed to be NIOSH approved.

CSA CA-N95

The CSA designation adds “CA-” before the performance level. A CA-N95 should be assessed using the CSA-related markings and model documentation. It is a separate designation, not evidence that every product with N95 in its name is NIOSH approved.

Other common designations

  • KN95: associated with a Chinese standard.
  • KF94: associated with a Korean standard.
  • FFP2: associated with European EN 149 requirements.

Health Canada describes these as different standards that may offer similar protection when the product is authentic and fits well. “Similar” does not mean identical test methods, labelling or fit for every wearer.

Five checks before purchasing

  1. Full manufacturer and model: match the product, package and supporting documentation.
  2. Exact standard: identify NIOSH N95, CSA CA-N95 or another designation.
  3. Size: one size may not fit everyone. Some models offer small, regular or larger sizes.
  4. Straps: compare head straps and ear loops in the context of the stated standard and intended use.
  5. Seller wording: look for model-specific facts, not universal claims applied to every respirator.

Fit still determines real-world performance

Respirators must seal to the face. For occupational use, fit testing may be required and must follow the workplace program. A user seal check is not the same as a formal fit test, but it should be performed as instructed whenever the respirator is put on.
