Respirator vs Medical Mask: What Is the Difference in Canada?

Respirators and medical masks solve different problems

Health Canada distinguishes respirators from medical masks. A respirator is designed to fit tightly around the nose and mouth so that air is drawn through the filter material. A medical mask does not require a perfect facial seal and generally provides less wearer protection from inhaled airborne particles than a properly fitted respirator.

Both can provide source control, but a respirator’s protection depends heavily on fit and seal. A product with strong filter material can still perform poorly for a particular wearer if air leaks around the edges.

What does “N95” mean?

Health Canada explains that the N in N95 means the respirator is not resistant to oil, while 95 refers to a minimum filtration efficiency of 95% for the test particles used under the NIOSH standard. Authentic NIOSH-approved N95 respirators carry specific markings, including the manufacturer, model, NIOSH name or logo and a TC approval number.

Canada also has the CSA respirator designation system. A product marked CA-N95 is not simply another spelling of N95: it refers to a Canadian standard and should be evaluated using the exact markings and documentation for that model.

What is a medical or surgical mask?

Medical masks are loose-fitting, single-use products. Some are described as procedure masks and some as surgical masks. ASTM F2100 evaluates medical-mask material performance using measures that include bacterial filtration efficiency, particulate filtration efficiency, differential pressure, synthetic-blood penetration resistance and flammability. It does not turn a medical mask into a respirator or assess the facial seal in the same way.

Which should you choose?

  • For community use: choose a clean, dry, undamaged product that fits comfortably and closely without gaps, following current public-health guidance.
  • For workplace hazards: begin with the employer’s hazard assessment and required respiratory-protection or PPE program. Do not select solely from a retail product name.
  • For a respirator: confirm the exact standard, model, size and markings, then follow the manufacturer’s fitting and seal-check instructions.
  • For a medical mask: confirm the stated ASTM level or other recognized standard and whether fluid resistance or another feature is relevant to the intended setting.

Buyer checklist

  1. Identify whether the need is respiratory protection, source control, fluid-barrier performance or general community masking.
  2. Read the full model name and standard—do not assume every product called an “N95 mask” has the same authorization.
  3. Choose the correct size and strap style.
  4. Check packaging quantity and whether you need boxes or cases.
  5. Inspect the product before use and replace it if damaged, damp, dirty or otherwise unsuitable under the manufacturer’s instructions.
